Happy Black History Month!

We want to give you an update on all the fantastic work that has been taking place in Black Leaders over the last few months. We recently held our third steering group meeting and below is a summary of our discussions to keep you in the loop on our progress. 

Don’t forget the meeting on 12th October where you will hear from the team members about their work and of course the exciting Black Leaders launch event taking place on 22nd October 2020.

INCLUSIVE WORKPLACES –
BLACK INCLUSION INDEX


WHAT IS BLACK INCLUSION INDEX?

To contribute to the Inclusive Workplaces mission of tangible, impactful and sustainable activity focussed on attraction, retention and engagement of our present and future black leaders.

OUR OBJECTIVES

  • To produce a robust measure of Black Inclusion in workplaces.
  • Provide access to a tangible metric to identify inclusion gaps.
  • To help organisations create inclusive workplaces.

OUR PROGRESS TO DATE

  • Black Inclusion Index (BII) Project Brief (PDD) completed and circulated to Black Leaders (BL) Core Team & BII Workstream.
  • Initial meeting held with global company Nielsen. HR Director, UK & Ireland in full support.
  • Second meeting held with HR Director, Commercial Activation Director and MD for Europe Commercial Insights at Nielsen. BII presented.
  • Deadline confirmed (22.10.2020) for understanding of what BL will produce for the BII and beginning data collection.
  • Nielsen to provide a detailed proposal – BII Workstream to incorporate into detailed Project Management Plan.
  • Initial list of BII dimensions sent to Nielsen.

NEXT STEPS

  • Workstream meeting with Nielsen to take place on 07th October to discuss proposal.
  • 22nd October – Deadline for BII Launch. Nielsen to co-introduce BII. First round of data collection to commence.
  • Review Nielsen proposal and incorporate into detailed Project Management Plan.
  • Begin work on communications.

INCLUSIVE WORKPLACES –
EVENTS


WHAT IS EVENTS

A series of events to connect black leader voices to diverse audiences to contribute to the Inclusive Workplaces mission of tangible, impactful and sustainable activity focussed on attraction, retention and engagement of our present and future black leaders.

OUR OBJECTIVES

  • To deliver a series of events connected to various aspects of the workplace which impact black people.
  • Provide education, awareness, thought leadership and action.
  • To have an annual black leaders conference Black Leaders: Inclusive Workplaces Conferences.
  • Create a speaker directory for Black Leaders Inclusive Workplaces events.

OUR PROGRESS TO DATE

  • Rather than a separate workstream this is a collective partnership and deliverable of all the workstream leads across Inclusive Workplaces.
  • Initial meeting held to discuss calendar of events with Inclusive Workplaces inaugural event taking place in late November early December.

NEXT STEPS

  • Design event calendar for Inclusive Workplaces with a view to partner with others but mainly focus on lifting the lid of key topics impacting black people in the workplace.
  • Design first event and confirm date and potential speakers.

BLACK INCLUSION WEEK
10 – 16 May 2021


WHAT IS BLACK INCLUSION WEEK

An observance event that raises awareness of the importance of black inclusion and creates a platform for change to enable true equality for people of African and Caribbean descent. Because –

OUR OBJECTIVES

  • Make us stronger as one community.
  • Empower and facilitate action.
  • Celebrate black people in the UK.
  • Create a commitment towards change.
  • Connect through collaboration.

OUR PROGRESS TO DATE

  • Exploration and review of existing observance events.
  • Direction, objectives and outcomes confirmed.
  • Confirmed dates, theme, comms messages.
  • Key activities brainstormed and completed.
  • Key activities delegated to subgroups/individuals for progression.

NEXT STEPS

  • Establish partner relationships.
  • Develop social media campaign.
  • Design events/engaging webinars.
  • Activity countdown planning.
  • Black Leaders Workstream alignment.

OUR PURPOSE

Activities focused on connecting, engaging, celebrating, and raising the visibility of our black communities and some of the great unsung people who lead them.

OUR DELIVERABLES

  • My 67 Minutes Campaign – Launch during Black Inclusion Week (May 2021)
  • Nelson Mandela volunteering campaign focusing on 67 minutes representing 67 years.
  • The Empowerment Programme – Launch 12th October 2020.
  • Leadership and empowerment programme for Black Communities.
  • Black Event Calendar – Launch Late November 2020.
  • Celebrating and promoting key Black moments in history throughout the year.
  • Webinars and Podcasts – Launch first webinar/podcast 12th October 2020.
  • Series of virtual events promoting and profiling Black leaders and topical issues.

NEXT STEPS

  • Branded material for 67 minutes campaign to be revised.
  • Programme outline for 67 minutes campaign to be agreed and adapted.
  • Questionnaire for Empowerment Programme to be confirmed and finalised -2nd October. Design to be completed – 06th October.
  • Identify key events/moments for Inclusion for Black Events Calendar – 16th October. Finalise design – early November.
  • Format and timetable of Webinars/Podcasts to be agreed – first webinar/podcast to be launched 12th October.

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION


OUR PURPOSE

Deliver a programme of training, tools, resources and support designed to inspire children, teachers and educational leaders to actively contribute to an inclusive society

OUR OBJECTIVES

  • Create a sense of pride and belonging in all Black people.
  • Empower inclusion and allyship in all.
  • Encourage the teaching of the true history of the United Kingdom.

OUR PROGRESS TO DATE

  • Established the framework for the toolkit.
  • Conducting desk based review of existing toolkits.
  • Established action teams to develop the toolkit.

NEXT STEPS

  • Confirm toolkit outline.
  • Establish partnerships in schools.
